Autumn Equinox: When the Light Begins to Recede
The equinox is not a mood board for autumn. It is a live turning point in the sky: the Sun enters Libra, the Moon is almost full in Aquarius, and the next six weeks begin to question our agreements, attachments and use of energy.

On September 23, 2026, at 00:05 UTC, the centre of the Sun crosses the celestial equator and the Sun enters 0° Libra. That is 03:05 in Moscow and 02:05 CEST in Vienna. In the Northern Hemisphere, the light begins its slow retreat. In astrology, the solar story turns from Virgo's editing desk toward Libra's difficult art of living with other people.
This is not a day for vague wishes about "balance". The chart is more specific than that. It asks: what exactly has become uneven, who is carrying the weight, and what agreement would make the next season more truthful?
What is actually in the sky
The astronomical event is exact, but the astrological picture around it has several layers:
- The Sun is newly in Libra, at the first degree of the sign of agreements, proportion and mutuality.
- The waxing gibbous Moon is in Aquarius for most of the day, moving toward Pisces late at night. Feelings are less private and more observant: we notice the group, the future and the distance we need in order to think.
- Mercury is in Libra, so the mind wants to compare, negotiate and find language that another person can actually hear.
- Venus is in Scorpio, which makes the ruler of Libra much less interested in polite appearances. Trust, loyalty, shared money and the things we do not say become part of the conversation.
- Mars is finishing Cancer, putting heat around home, family, safety and old emotional reflexes.
- Saturn in Aries, Uranus in Gemini, Neptune in Aries and Pluto in Aquarius are retrograde. The outer sky is not asking for a clean launch. It is asking us to review the way we have already begun to act, speak, organise and belong.
There is also a useful tension in the background: the Libra Sun is moving toward an opposition with Neptune in Aries, exact on September 25. That can make a beautiful promise feel more convincing than a concrete fact. The antidote is not cynicism. It is a second question: what would this look like in a calendar, a budget, a message or a boundary?
The sky you can actually see
The equinox has a simple visual signature. Around this date the Sun rises close to due east and sets close to due west. If you have a safe view of the horizon, mark the direction of sunrise and sunset. You can return to the same place at the winter solstice and see how far the light has moved.
Before dawn, from a dark location in the Northern Hemisphere, look east for the faint cone of zodiacal light, sunlight scattered by interplanetary dust. Jupiter will be the bright point that helps you recognise the morning sky. The Moon will be bright enough to wash out many faint objects, but the point is not to collect an impressive photograph. It is to notice that the season is a change in geometry, not just a change in décor. Never look at the Sun through binoculars, a telescope or a camera lens.
What to do on September 23
Give the day a shape. You do not need to believe that the equinox grants wishes. It is enough to use the solar turning point as a deadline for an honest review.
In the morning: choose the axis
Before opening messages, write one sentence completing this prompt:
"In the next season, I want a fairer relationship with..."
Do not write a person if the real subject is money, time, work or your own attention. Libra is excellent at seeing the other side, but it can become evasive when it refuses to name the actual resource being negotiated.
During the day: make a three-column inventory
Take one sheet of paper and make three columns:
1. What I harvested - results, skills, money, contacts, clarity, completed work. 2. What it cost - hours, sleep, health, intimacy, concentration, unpaid labour. 3. What must change - one practical adjustment, not a new personality.
The third column is where astrology becomes useful. A transit is not a verdict. It is a chance to change the arrangement before the same pattern asks for your attention again.
In relationships: have one clean conversation
Choose one exchange that has been running on hints. Use this structure:
"I notice that... I need... I can offer... I am no longer able to... Can we agree on...?"
This is better than a Libra-style performance of being fine and better than a Scorpio-style test to see whether someone will guess the truth. Venus in Scorpio wants honesty, but honesty without a request can become another form of control.
With money: look at the invisible agreement
Review one shared expense, subscription, debt, invoice, household task or piece of unpaid work. Ask who benefits, who decides and who remembers. The most important financial insight may not be about a large purchase. It may be that a small recurring imbalance has been quietly pricing your relationship.
In the evening: close the day symbolically
Cook something with a seed, grain, apple or honey. Clear one surface. Write down three things you are grateful to have completed and one thing you are deliberately leaving unfinished until you have better information. If rowan is meaningful in your tradition, place a small branch by a window as a seasonal symbol. Let the meaning be yours; do not turn a folk custom into a promise of supernatural protection.
What not to do
The equinox is a poor moment for grand declarations made to escape uncertainty. With the Sun approaching Neptune, be careful with:
- promising more than your calendar can hold
- spending to soothe an uncomfortable feeling
- calling silence a compromise
- making a relationship decision based on one dramatic conversation
- confusing intuition with evidence
Pause does not mean passivity. It means giving the beautiful idea a form sturdy enough to survive tomorrow morning.
Where this lands in your birth chart
Find the house containing 0° Libra in your natal chart. That is the room where the next season asks for a better agreement. The 1st house may ask for a balance between self-definition and approval. The 2nd brings money and self-worth. The 4th brings family and home. The 6th brings work and health routines. The 7th brings partnership and clients. The 8th brings shared finances, intimacy and trust. The 10th brings career and public responsibility. The 11th brings communities and audiences. The 12th brings rest, closure and the private cost of keeping everything together.
Then look across the chart to 0° Aries. The equinox always works as an axis: I and we, desire and obligation, independence and cooperation. The Libra house cannot become peaceful if the Aries house is being denied.
The real beginning of Libra season
The equinox does not ask you to become nicer. It asks you to become more exact. A fair relationship is not one where nobody is disappointed. It is one where the terms can be spoken, revised and shared.
On September 23, watch the east and west horizons, read the sky as a pattern rather than a prediction, and make one adjustment that your future self will recognise as care. That is a much stronger ritual than starting over.
A note for the weeks ahead
Venus turns retrograde on October 3 at 8° Scorpio and remains retrograde until November 14, travelling back toward Libra. The equinox is therefore an opening question for a longer review of love, money, taste, loyalty and value. You do not need to solve those subjects on one day. You do need to stop pretending that an arrangement is balanced when your body, bank account or calendar says otherwise.
